Gen-Z's Transforming Role in Realizing a Blue Economy: Synergy of Digital Education, Technological Innovation, and Ocean-Friendly Policies on Kenjeran Beach
Abstract
This research examines the role of Gen Z in supporting the blue economy through the utilization of technology, digital education, and policy advocacy for marine sustainability, using Kenjeran Beach in Surabaya as a case study. Kenjeran is a coastal area with strong economic and tourism potential yet faces serious environmental challenges, making youth engagement essential. Gen-Z is considered a strategic driver because they are technologically literate, creative, and increasingly conscious of environmental issues. This study employs qualitative methods, including a literature review, field observations, and interviews with students, community members, and residents. The findings show that Gen-Z can make significant contributions through practical and impactful initiatives, such as developing digital campaigns on social media to promote marine conservation, creating educational content in the form of posters, short videos, and infographics about the importance of maintaining beach cleanliness, organizing routine beach cleanup activities, and establishing environmental awareness communities as platforms to develop ideas and implement real actions to protect coastal ecosystems. The study concludes that collaboration between Gen-Z, local communities, and the government is crucial to realizing a sustainable blue economy, demonstrating the vital role of youth in preserving ocean sustainability for shared long-term benefits.
