Abstract

In the last ten years, especially in the world of social media, there has been a proliferation of opinions that prohibit music and singing. They loudly and simultaneously on a number of social media declared that music and singing were haram. They are generally from Salafi circles. Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah, through its Tarjih Council, is of the opposite opinion, does not view music and singing as something that is haram, but is in a neutral position regarding what the music and singing are used for. This research uses library research methods, by exploring classical and modern sources, to trace its historical roots from the beginning of Islam, how music and songs were played and discussed. How the Prophet and his companions viewed the issue of music and singing, and how generation after generation questioned music and singing. This research is expected to produce clear and straightforward conclusions regarding the arguments built by the ulama who conclude that music and singing are haram. Then traces Muhammadiyah's framework of thought regarding the building blocks of its thinking in arguments until it concludes that music is something neutral, depending on what the music and singing are used for.
