Abstract

As a mufassir who is "not widely known" in modern scholars, al Wahidi has laid a foundation stone of tafsir for the mufassirs after him. Ghazali's adage "What our teacher al-Wahidi wrote suffices" becomes an illustration of how great the tafsir written by al Wahidi. The philological approach that al Wahidi used in his tafsir became one of the uniqueness of alWahidi's figure. Beside the new approach that he tried to offer, al Wahidi also pioneered the writing of brief tafsir, which allegedly became the prototype of tafsir Jalalain. The results of this study verify Walid Saleh's offer that the mainstream of medieval Sunni exegesis actually brought up progressive figures. This view certainly rejects the assumption of most commentaries' researchers today that the mainstream of medieval Sunni tafsir was dominated by tafsir bil riwayah. This study also shows how the beginning of linguistic studies entered the dominant portion of Quran interpretation through al Wahidi’s philological offer. This research will reveal the epistemology of tafsir and philological offers in verifying the validity of exegese tradition (riwayah). In addition, this study also tries to unravel the historical and historiographical value nodes of al Wahidi's exegesis. The perspective of tafsir geneaology offered by Walid Saleh will be an analytical knife in determining the historiography of tafsir al Wahidi.
