Lasem as a Miniature of Multicultural Indonesia: A Study of the Acculturation of Javanese, Chinese, and Islamic Cultures from a Multiculturalism Perspective

Abstract

This article focuses on the dynamics of cultural acculturation in Lasemas a result of interaction between Javanese, Chinese, and Islamic boarding school (pesantren) communities in historical and geographical contexts. The objective of this study is to examine the process of acculturation and the influencing factors, including geographical conditions, migration history, social interactions, and religious networks. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature study, field observation, and visual documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive and triangulation techniques to gain a comprehensive understanding. The results show that Lasem's strategic position as a coastal city, the integration of residential spaces, intermarriage, and collective historical memory playan important role in fostering cultural acculturation. This acculturation is reflected in various aspects of life, such as language, architecture, batik, and social traditions that develop harmoniously. In conclusion, this research indicates that Lasem isa tangible representation of a multicultural society formed through a long interaction process, serving as an example of successful cultural integration based on tolerance and social openness in Indonesia.
