Abstract

Jumbo is Indonesia's best-selling animated film, not only for entertainment but also as a medium to explore traces of collective memory and identity through language. Using cultural linguistics, this study aims to discuss how language in Jumbo (2025) can represent traces of memory and identity between characters using the theory of collective memory. Thus, the results of this study indicate that the dialogue and diction of the characters in Jumbo contain values of love for family, loss, longing, and describe the characters' thoughts and feelings. Finally, language can reconstruct past memories and personal trauma related to shared experiences throughout the nation's history. Therefore, the language in this film functions as a reflection of the collective memory and identity of the Indonesian people.
