Abstract

Film is an audio-visual art form that combines literary elements in the form of stories and dialogue, theater, music, and visual arts. Films usually have the purpose of entertainment, education, promotion, and even propaganda. Similarly, the film Pengempungan di Bukit Duri is not only present as a spectacle, but also as a representation of racism regarding ethnic tensions, discriminatory acts, power conflicts, and juvenile delinquency. This study aims to analyze how racist dialogue in the film is formed through codes of reality, codes of representation, and codes of ideology based on John Fiske's semiotic theory and shows how the film can be understood as a cultural text that reflects the social conditions of Indonesian society post-independence. This film can also be understood as a language space that presents the collective memory of society through the film's content related to social experiences and the history of ethnic discrimination that has occurred in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative research method with semiotic analysis. The results of the study show that the film Pengempungan di Bukit Duri does not merely present confrontational scenes, but also conveys an ideological discourse regarding ethnic discrimination and social inequality. Thus, this film can be understood as a cultural text that is full of meaning while opening up a wide space for interpretation for the audience.
