The Shift of Quinn’s Character in Exploring Self-Identity in Goffney’s Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry
Abstract
This research aims to reveal what kind of character development that happened to Quinn during exploration for identity in the novel Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry using Character Development Theory by Erikson (1993). The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative where data collection is carried out by reading and analyzing the conversations that show Quinn's development in the novel. The issue raised is about Quinn's character who has no self-confidence, but indirectly she begins to find her identity after going through struggles. From this research, the researcher found that Quinn's experiences significant character development, especially in her self-confidence. Which has a big influence from her closest friend’s support. From this journey, Quinn can find her identity that is able to face her emotions and all her desires. Researcher provide clear knowledge, especially to readers who want to conduct the same topic related to character development or self-identity.
