An Analysis of Figurative Language in the Song Lyrics of Miley Cyrus’s Endless Summer Vacation Album
Abstract
This research aims to analyze the types of figurative language found in the lyrics of Miley Cyrus' Endless Summer Vacation album and explore the meaning of the figurative language found in the selected songs. This research focuses on three songs: “Flowers,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Island.” It uses Arvius’s (2003) theory of figurative language and Leech’s (1981) theory of meaning. This research used a qualitative approach; data was collected by searching, downloading, reading, and identifying figurative language in song lyrics. The research results show that metaphor is the figurative language most often used in Miley Cyrus' song lyrics. Besides that, connotative meaning is the most common form among the types. This research highlights how figurative language in songs is crucial in expressing deeper emotions and themes, especially those favoured by the younger generation. The conclusion highlights the importance of figurative language in enhancing emotional depth and creative expression in modern music.
