Abstract

This study aims to analyze hero and antihero archetypes found in Nella’s character in The Lost Apothecary novel by Sarah Penner. Carol Pearson`s hero archetype is used to analyze the hero and antihero archetypes in Nella`s character. The data of this research are divided into primary and secondary data sources. The primary data source is from the novel written by Sarah Penner entitled The Lost Apothecary. Then, the secondary data sources are from books, journal articles, and other legitimate sources. There are two results of this research. The first result is the hero archetype in Nella’s character, that is; the innocent, the warrior, the caregiver, the sage, the orphan, the magician, the seeker, the destroyer, the ruler, the creator, and the lover.
The second result is antihero archetypes in Nella’s character that are traumatized, gender biased, and misused. This analysis reveals that although Nella functions as a hero through protective actions, she also performs dangerous actions by creating poison to take revenge against the men who hurt them.
