Dzo'ul Milal dzoulmilal@uinsa.ac.id
This study aims to examine the use of directive speech acts in the movie script “War for the Planet of the Apes”, analyze their frequency, and identify the contextual factors that influence the speakers’ use of these acts. Using a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, this study has found 57 data containing directive speech acts to be categorized into seven different types based on Searle (1979), including command, suggestion, request, invitation, begging, forbidding, and warning. The type of directive speech act that appears the most is command (49.1%), which shows that the script of “War for the Planet of the Apes" is very thick with military style and authority. The least frequent type is forbidding (3.5%), reflecting that this movie script focuses more on positive directives than negative ones. This research contributes to pragmatic studies by showing that directive speech acts play a significant role in creating screenplays and offer scriptwriters insight into how to create inviting narratives through linguistic strategies.
2025-12-16T10:04:23+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4477 Tracing The Main Characters’ Wounds and Healing in Love from A to Z 2025-12-26T00:04:23+00:00 Adinda Azzahra Khairina adindaazzahra2004@gmail.com Wahju Kusumajanti wahjukusumajanti@uinsa.ac.id
This study explores the psychological conflicts of the main character,
Zayneb, in S.K. The comments contained offensive, demeaning, and harassing intent by ENGENE toward the K-pop group TREASURE. This research is motivated by the increasing conflict between fandoms in the digital space, which often manifests in verbal aggression. This research employed Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary speech acts to categorize the comments into five types: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this research indicate that assertive speech acts are the most dominant. These findings demonstrate how hate speech has become part of the symbolic practice, as hateful comments are often constructed to sound rational or reasoned, masking aggression behind seemingly neutral expressions of fandom dynamics.
2025-12-16T11:07:15+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4479 Sam's Trauma in Jim Sheridan’s film Brothers (2009) 2025-12-26T00:04:23+00:00 Kinata Adri Wijaya adriwijayak@gmail.com Abu Fanani abufanani@uinsa.ac.id
This study examines the representation of psychological trauma in Jim Sheridan’s film Brothers (2009) through the framework of psychoanalytic theory. Centered on the character of Sam Cahill, a U.S. Marine who returns from Afghanistan exhibiting symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the film offers a compelling narrative of psychic fragmentation, relational rupture, and the struggle for reintegration. The objective of this paper is to analyze how trauma is constructed and mediated cinematically, and how psychoanalytic concepts—such as repetition compulsion (Freud, 2024), repression, disavowal, and unconscious guilt—illuminate the psychological depth of the characters and their interpersonal dynamics.

Methodologically, the study employs a close reading of narrative structure, character development, and visual symbolism, supported by Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic frameworks (Forsyth, 2024). The analysis reveals that trauma in Brothers is not only portrayed through explicit behavioral symptoms, but also embedded in the film’s mise-en-scène, temporal disruptions, and relational tensions. The findings suggest that the film functions as a cinematic container for traumatic memory (Bion, 2023), inviting viewers into a shared affective experience that mirrors the disorientation and fragmentation of the traumatized subject (Caruth, 2022).

The study concludes that Brothers contributes to trauma discourse by dramatizing the psychic cost of war and the fragile process of healing. Its implications extend to film studies, trauma theory, and psychoanalytic criticism, offering a model for interdisciplinary engagement with cinematic texts.
2025-12-19T22:42:58+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4480 Discourse Analysis of Symbolism in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick 2025-12-26T00:04:24+00:00 Abbiyu Azel Budi Danendra abbiyu7477@gmail.com Suhandoko Suhandoko suhandoko@uinsa.ac.id
This study explores the symbolism of the Whale, the Pequod, and the Sea in Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick (1851) using discourse analysis. The research aims to reveal how these symbols are represented and how their meanings shift across different contexts in the novel. Employing a qualitative approach, the study examines how language, ideology, and perspective shape symbolic interpretation. The findings show that Melville’s symbols are not fixed but fluid, reflecting the dynamic interaction between human belief, power, and nature. The Whale embodies humanity’s struggle with the unknown, the Pequod mirrors social and ideological structures, and the Sea represents both the vastness of nature and the limits of human understanding. Through discourse analysis, this study concludes that Melville constructs meaning as a process of negotiation rather than a static allegory. The results contribute to literary studies by demonstrating how discourse shapes symbolic meaning, offering new insight into how language and ideology influence interpretation in classic literature.
2025-12-19T23:01:05+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4481 The Cycle of Oliver Quick’s New Equilibrium in Saltburn: A Todorov’s Narratology 2025-12-26T00:04:24+00:00 Ahmad Nahdhi Afifuddin nahdhiafifuddin@gmail.com Itsna Syahadatud Dinuriyah itsnadinurriyah@uinsa.ac.id
This research aims to study the narrative of Oliver Quick in the movie Saltburn (2023) utilizing the theory of Structuralism, focusing on its narratology. The researcher interprets and identifies utterances containing politeness to find out how these strategies can be used in a military environment with high authority using qualitative descriptive methods. The results of this study indicate that there are four types of politeness strategies such as bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record used by Ender Wiggin in the film. The bald on record strategy appears most dominantly, depicting clear and firm communication in a military environment. Positive and negative politeness strategies are used to maintain harmony between characters so they can work together, foster empathy and to show respect for the highest authority, especially when Ender develops his leadership skills. Meanwhile, off record strategies appear less frequently but can reflect the emotional state of the characters in the film indirectly. Overall, this study in analyzing politeness strategies can show that these strategies not only function as linguistic tools, but can also be used to develop leadership character, respect, power relations, and communication in leadership.
2025-12-20T10:31:48+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4483 Exploring Love and Islamic Value Between Ali And Amirah In She Wore Red Trainers 2025-12-26T00:04:25+00:00 Az Zahra Damayanti azzahradamayanti003@gmail.com Sufi Ikrima Sa'adah sufiikrima@uinsa.ac.id
This study examines the representation of teenage love from an Islamic perspective through the novel She Wore Red Trainers by Na'ima B. In the state of war, he tries to take real action by documenting the Syrian war on video and sharing it online. His attitude was part of his fight to create a free country from the military. Furthermore, Kenan also appears to be a protective figure for his siblings and Salama, his wife. Therefore, the analysis aims to determine how Kenan is portrayed through his characterization and as a representative Syrian character. Applying Edgar V. Roberts' theory, this study examines Kenan’s character through four aspects: his actions, words, thoughts, and perception. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research closely reads the novel to collect relevant data. Ultimately, the analysis found that Kenan's characterization is loving and optimistic. The second goal by Mohamed Marhoon, the player of Bahrain’s national team, caused a problem that was investigated by both Indonesian netizens and PSSI. This controversial goal has spread even discussed in European countries’ football communities. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative method to explain the words that media used to reports the news. The data were collected by reading the news and find some data with the tool called LancsBox. After that, the data were classified into word and word cluster, then combined them to identify the textual analysis, discursive practice, and social practice based on critical discourse analysis theory by Norman Fairclough (1996). In the end of the study, we can conclude that the researcher found the word such as controversial (42 tokens), stoppage time (14 instances), injury time (19 instances), etc. The researcher also explained the word cluster “stoppage time” and “injury time” refers to the referees who conducted this match and the word “controversial” refers to the referee who has suspected of performing the act of unfairness on his duties, which indicates that he was on the side of Bahrain team. Using a qualitative thematic approach, the research examines how 9/11 becomes a turning point that triggers Changez’s identity crisis, cultural alienation, and eventual self-redefinition. The analysis draws upon postcolonial theory to reveal how Hamid critiques Western power structures and the persistence of colonial attitudes in the post-9/11 world. Changez’s internal conflict—between admiration for Western modernity and loyalty to his Pakistani and Muslim identity—illustrates the tension of the postcolonial subject negotiating belonging in a polarized global society. The novel also reflects the rise of Islamophobia, which reduces Muslim identity to stereotypes and fosters fear and exclusion. Through Changez’s transformation from an ambitious professional to a socially conscious critic of Western imperialism, Hamid presents a counter-narrative to Western representations of terrorism and Muslim identity. This study concludes that The Reluctant Fundamentalist captures the profound psychological, cultural, and political consequences of 9/11, revealing how global events can fracture identity and redefine one’s sense of belonging in an age of fear and misunderstanding.
2025-12-24T04:35:09+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4535 Denotative and Connotative Meanings in the Song Lyrics of Cardigan by Taylor Swift 2025-12-26T00:04:27+00:00 Aldila Dwi Mayanti aldiladwi93@gmail.com Endratno Pilih Swasono endratno007@uinsa.ac.id
This study aims to reveal the denotative and connotative meanings in the song Cardigan by Taylor Swift. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of identification and interpretation of lyrics containing figurative meanings. The researchers used a semantic approach to analyze the denotative and connotative meaning in Taylor Swift’s song “Cardigan.” The result of the study shows 25 data, with 12 lyrics containing denotative and 13 lyrics containing connotative meanings. Denotative meanings are found in the lyrics “when you are young, they assume you know nothing,” “but I knew you,” and “dancin' in your levis.” Meanwhile, connotative meanings are found in the lyrics “high heels on cobblestones,” “old cardigan under someone's bed,” and “you drew stars around my scars” to describe the sadness, pain, and process of self-maturation experienced by the main character after going through a complicated romantic relationship. Employing a qualitative descriptive design grounded in established phonemic frameworks by Crystal (2008), Roach (2020), and Wells (1982), the analysis samples selected in-game voice lines and transcribes each character’s speech in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for comparison with canonical phonological descriptions. Findings indicate clear regional distinctions: American accents are marked by rhoticity, vowel fronting, and monophthongization; British varieties display non-rhoticity and lengthened back vowels; and Australian speech shows fronted /ʉː/, raised /æ/, and centering diphthongs. These results demonstrate that performed speech in video games can encode phonemic variation faithfully, thereby extending theories of accent perception into applied media contexts and supplying ecologically valid evidence of phonemic authenticity. The study bridges experimental phonetics and media representation and shows that accent realism can be evaluated through systematic linguistic analysis. Noted limitations include a narrow dataset and the absence of instrumental measurement, which future research could address through larger samples, acoustic analysis, and perceptual validation to strengthen claims about how audiences recognize and respond to accentual cues in interactive media.
2025-12-25T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4538 Interpreting Cartoon Characters as Signs in the Lyrics of Livingston’s Fairytale: A Peircean Approach 2025-12-30T06:33:56+00:00 Attalah Rizky Akbari Sutoyo attarizky7@gmail.com Itsna Syahadatud Dinurriyah itsnadinurriyah@uinsa.ac.id
This study examines the representation of cartoon characters in Livingston’s song Fairytale through the lens of Charles Sanders Peirce’s Triadic Model of Signs, highlighting how these characters convey the tension between childhood expectations and the realities of adult life. This study shows that how politeness strategies are used to reflect manipulation and control in his interactions with other characters through his utterances. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach to get the explanation in depth. The data were collected from downloaded script that has 252 of Snow’s utterances, and then the researcher analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, that has four strategies such as bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. The findings reveal that the most frequently used strategies are bald on record (132 utterances) and positive politeness (78 utterances), followed by negative politeness (27 utterances) and off-record (15 utterances). However, the two strategies used to manipulate other characters are bald-on-record and positive politeness. The analysis reveals that Snow
employs bald on record to assert hierarchy and dominance in critical situations. At the same time, positive politeness is manipulated to foster a false sense of intimacy and create emotional dependence.
2025-12-25T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4543 Symbol of Game in Karuna Riazi’s The Gauntlet 2026-01-02T02:00:16+00:00 Fatima Zahra fazaalhaddad@gmail.com Ramadhina Ulfa Nuristama ramadhina.ulfa.nuristama@uinsa.ac.id
The Gauntlet by Karuna Riazi is a middle-grade novel that tells a story of a board game that lured children into their world and trapped them inside for the personal gain of the Architect of the game. Farah and her friends were determined to help her brother escape and go back into their world. In order to do so, they were forced to win several games that the Architect presented to them; otherwise, they would be imprisoned inside the game forever. By applying Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotics theory, this study aims to reveal how the challenges Farah and her friends must face in the story work as a medium for the author to present ideas of control and liberation through the metaphor of a board game. The theory used in this research is Searle and Vandervaken’s (1985) about illocutionary acts specifically in expressive acts. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the researcher identified any kind of post on X platform, within a time span of one week, that contains about expressive acts related to Liam Payne’s death. Furthermore, there are six expressive acts found in this research namely apologize (to express regret), thank (to express gratitude), condole (to express sympathy), lament (to express hard expression of sorrow), protest (to show disagreement), and deplore (to condemn someone). Related to that, lament and condole are the most frequently used in expressing sadness and shock over the news of Liam’s death. These findings then show that expressive acts in the context of mourning on digital media not only serve as expressions of individual grief, but also as a way to create a sense of community among users. This sense of community is reflected in shared grief, empathy, and mutual support, both among fans who have lost their idol and among the wider social media user base who acknowledge the tragedy. Therefore, this study contributes to pragmatics by showing how expressive acts are used in social media, highlighting the role of language in facilitating emotional connections.
2025-12-25T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4545 Politeness Strategies in Sadiq Khan’s May 2024 Victory Speech 2026-01-03T09:55:15+00:00 Sabina Wahda Farhania Firman wahdasabina45@gmail.com Fani Indrawan fani.indrawan@uinsa.ac.id
This research explores the use of politeness strategies in Sadiq Khan’s May 2024 victory speech, applying Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory as the analytical lens. Political speeches, especially post-election ones, are rich in pragmatic functions that serve to affirm legitimacy, express gratitude, and manage public perception. Using a descriptive-qualitative method, the study analyzes the speech transcript to identify utterances that reflect four main politeness strategies: Bald On-Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record. Sixteen utterances were classified and interpreted based on their pragmatic roles in mitigating face-threatening acts (FTAs), building solidarity, and asserting leadership. The findings show that Khan strategically balances directness and empathy, using politeness to navigate political tension and reinforce his image as an inclusive leader. For instance, expressions of gratitude and solidarity enhance audience rapport, while indirect criticisms and apologies soften confrontational elements. These linguistic choices reflect broader socio-political narratives, demonstrating how politeness functions as a persuasive tool in democratic discourse. This study contributes to the intersection of pragmatics and political communication by highlighting the nuanced role of politeness
in shaping leadership identity and public trust. It also opens avenues for future research on cross-cultural politeness strategies and comparative analysis across political contexts and genres.
2025-12-25T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4546 Presupposition as an Interpretive Mechanism in the "Tangled” Movie 2026-01-03T10:17:28+00:00 Angely Defa Maylafasha angelydefaa@gmail.com A. The research specifically examines how presuppositions contribute
to the interpretive depth of the story. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, emphasizing meaning construction within dialogue and context. The data were presented narratively to demonstrate how presuppositions operate in character utterances, while numerical counts were included to clarify the frequency and distribution of each presupposition type. The analysis identified 40 instances of presupposition: 18 existential, 1 factive, 1 non-factive, 5 lexical, 10 structural, and 5 counter-factual. Existential presuppositions appeared most frequently, suggesting that assumptions related to existence and possession play a central role in conveying shared knowledge and background information among characters. These findings indicate that presupposition is integral to guiding audience inference and enhancing narrative coherence. Overall, the study
demonstrates that presuppositions significantly contribute to implicit meaning-making in Tangled, reinforcing the film’s storytelling depth and interpretive richness.
2025-12-25T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4547 Analysis Personal Conflicts in Shelina Zahra Janmohamed's "Love in A Headscarf" 2026-01-03T10:42:33+00:00 Randi Septian Nur Pradana randigamtenk146@gmail.com Wahju Kusumajanti wahjukusumajanti@uinsa.ac.id
This study aims to unveil conflicts thath experienced by sheina in “ Love in a Headscarf” (2009), which narrates the author's challenging journey to find love as a South Asian Muslim woman in Western England. The purpose of this study is to determine how the main character, Christopher, is portrayed in the novel through direct and indirect characterization. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the primary data collected directly from the novel itself. This analysis focuses on textual evidence in the novel that reflects Christopher's traits, which are then categorized into direct and indirect characterization. Findings from this study indicate that direct characterization depicts Christopher as a brilliant mathematician, with logical reasoning, honesty, and discomfort with physical contact. Meanwhile, indirect characterization, demonstrated through his communication style, shows that he always avoids interaction with others, and his relationship with his parents also consistently shows that he understands his emotions. This research shows that Mark Haddon's novel builds a unique character for the main character, Christopher, through the text description in the novel, which allows readers to experience the world from his unique perspective. Based on Searle’s (1979) classification, assertive speech acts express a speaker’s belief in the truth of a statement and include several forms such as stating, suggesting, complaining, claiming, and reporting. The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret how these assertive acts are manifested in the film’s dialogue to reveal the characters’ intentions, attitudes, and relationships. The study applies a descriptive qualitative method, with the film’s transcript serving as the main data source. Selected dialogues involving the main characters Peter Parker, MJ, Nick Fury, and Mysterio were analyzed contextually to uncover their pragmatic functions. The results show five main types of assertive acts
with the following frequencies: stating (16 occurrences or 24%), reporting (23 or 34%), claiming (14 or 21%), suggesting (11 or 16%), and complaining (8 or 12%), with a total of 67 utterances. In addition, the media discourse reflected a mixture of admiration and criticism, describing the victory as the result of perseverance and teamwork while also suggesting areas for improvement in consistency and strategy.
2025-12-25T23:03:39+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4572 Analysis Of Margot’s Character In The Menu And How She Overcomes Her Problems 2025-12-26T00:04:35+00:00 Nazihah Dhau Najah 03020321117@student.uinsby.ac.id Itsna Syahadatud Dinurriyah itsnadinurriyah@uinsa.ac.id
This study examines the character of Margot, the main character in Mark Mylod's 2022 film, The Menu. In this thriller, a woman shrouded in mystery joins her partner for an exclusive dining experience on a remote island. She discovers a sinister scheme orchestrated by the renowned chef, which goes far beyond her bounds. The investigation also explores Margot's problem-solving methods. This study utilizes Edgar V. Roberts' theory of characterization, a framework suitable for literary analysis. This theory focuses on Margot's actions, words, and thoughts, and how other characters perceive her. This research employs a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The film's narrative and dialogue serve as primary sources Critical reviews and related analyses provide secondary data. Through this methodology, this study seeks to understand how each aspect of Margot's character contributes to her ability to adapt and survive in a dangerous situation. The findings indicate that Margot embodies the traits of brave, strong determination, and clever. Her actions and communication reflect these traits. Armed with these traits, she successfully overcomes the challenges she faces. She defies the norms established by Chef Slowik and ultimately escapes danger. This unique personality proved to be a key factor in Margot's success in escaping life-threatening.
2025-12-25T23:06:49+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4573 A Literature review on Why Animals Cannot Acquire Human Language 2025-12-26T00:04:35+00:00 Mochammad Akbar Udin Maulana akunyaakbaar@gmail.com Raudlotul Jannah raudlotuljannah@uinsa.ac.id
The objective of this study is to comprehend the underlying factors that preclude the acquisition of human language by animals. To this end, a comprehensive review of experiments conducted on parrots and anthropoid apes has been undertaken. The research employs a qualitative approach, underpinned by a literature review method, with a focus on the cognitive and neurological functions of animals in the context of communication. The primary data have been sourced from a range of previous studies, including but not limited to: Irene Pepperberg’s long-term experiment with the African grey parrot Alex; the Gua project by Robert Yerkes; and the research conducted by the Kellogg family, as well as William Henry Furness III’s research on chimpanzees and orangutans. The findings demonstrate that while certain animals possess the capacity to imitate human sounds, respond to verbal commands, and comprehend specific concepts, their communication cannot be categorised as language. It has been demonstrated that parrots such as Alex and Cosmo have the capacity to associate words with objects and express simple intentions. However, their ability remains constrained by imitation and associative learning. In a similar manner, anthropoid apes such as Gua exhibited marked intelligence and responsiveness. However, due to anatomical and neurological limitations, they were unable to produce human-like speech. In conclusion, it can be posited that language is a complex result of human cognitive evolution that involves symbolic thinking, abstract reasoning, and social awareness. While animals may communicate with apparent efficacy, they lack the neurological and anatomical systems that are the hallmark of true language. The present findings indicate that language functions not only as a medium for communication but also as a distinctive manifestation of human consciousness and thought.
2025-12-25T23:08:40+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4574 Nasir’s Inner Conflict and Moral Struggle for Identity in Hafsah Faizal’s We Hunt the Flame 2025-12-26T00:04:35+00:00 Muhammad Abiel Mahasin abielmahsn@gmail.com Sufi Ikrima Sa'adah sufiikrima@uinsa.ac.id
This research explores the internal conflict of Nasir, the main character in the novel We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal. This study analyzes how the character’s internal conflict occurs using Sigmund Freud’s theory of Psychoanalysis, aiming to explore how the id, ego, and superego manifest as a consequence of past trauma. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the narrative texts and dialogues within the novel served as the primary data. Through careful and thorough reading, several narratives and dialogues from Nasir that were deemed to contain these three aspects were collected. This data was then analyzed based on Sigmund Freud’s theoretical framework. The findings reveal an internal conflict within Nasir caused by the impact of his past trauma, specifically his search for paternal recognition. His ego emerges to rationalize his harmful actions to satisfy his id, while the appearance of his superego punishes him with overwhelming guilt. By applying Freud’s framework, this research fills a gap in the literary analysis of the novel and proves that psychoanalytic theory is a valuable tool for explaining character complexity in fantasy literature.
2025-12-25T23:10:12+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4575 Slang Words in "Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)" Movie: A Sociolinguistic Study 2025-12-26T00:04:36+00:00 Shafira Febri Azhari ssashafiraa@gmail.com Murni Fidiyanti murnifidiyanti@uinsa.ac.id
This study investigates the discussion of slang found in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) from a sociolinguistic perspective. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the dialogues in the movie were analyzed and categorized into five types of language styles: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The results show that all five language styles, frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate, are found in the film. Among them, the casual style is the most dominant. Therefore, the analysis of social factors focuses specifically on the casual style. The results reveal that casual style is influenced by several social factors, such as the participant's close relationship, informal setting, personal topics, and emotional function. This study aims to analyze the meaning behind the utterances and the use of conversational implicature by the therapist character, Sean, in the movie Good Will Hunting (1997) as a primary tool for engaging with his interlocutors. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this research examines Sean’s utterance from the original movie script by categorizing them as either generalized or particularized conversational implicature. The findings reveal that Sean almost exclusively uses particularized conversational implicature. This is not a random occurrence but a deliberate therapeutic strategy designed to deal with Will’s intellectual and emotional defense mechanism, which makes their communication ineffective. The analysis demonstrates that Sean’s implicature functions to establish trust, challenge Will’s intellectual shields, model vulnerability, and facilitate an emotional breakthrough. This study concludes that particularized conversational implicature may serve as a powerful and empathetic communication tool in sensitive interactions by bridging linguistic theory with psychological analysis to illustrate how indirect language can be fundamental to therapeutic progress.
2025-12-25T23:46:20+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4580 Comparative Media Framing of the NewJeans Controversy in 2024: An Analysis of Yonhap and BBC 2025-12-26T00:04:37+00:00 Fella Audita Julistya fellaauditajulistya@gmail.com Raudlotul Jannah raudlotuljannah@uinsa.ac.id
The purpose of this study is to analyze and compare how Yonhab and BBC, two major news media outlets, framed their reporting on the controversy involving NewJeans and their agency Ador/HYBE. The research method used a qualitative approach with a total of eight news articles from each media outlet studied. The results showed that Yonhab and BBC differed in their framing of the news regarding the issues faced by NewJeans. Yonhab tended to focus on the breach of contract by both parties, while the BBC reported on the main issues of harassment and mistreatment in the workplace. In addition, both news media outlets also have similarities in defining the conflict as a case of a breakdown in the relationship between the artist and the agency. Along with the CDA theory, the arguments of findings are given interpretation through existing significant lexical choices and metaphors that most indicate the linguistic pattern of the subject. Alienation is what happens when someone feels lonely, disconnected, and cut off from meaningful connections to other people. The study aims to analyze and discuss the specificity of the depiction of the alienation in Ove's character, as well as to consider how that is described in the story. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach focusing on A Man Called Ove (2014) as the primary source, along with other sources such as journals, books, and articles. Data was collected by deep reading the book and analyzed using Melvin Seeman's theory of alienation, which has five parts: powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, Self-Estrangement, and social isolation. It also uses character theory to examine how Ove, the main character is portrayed. The study has shown that Ove's emotional separation from his wife and job, coupled with his repeated suicide attempts after the loss of his job for two years, caused him to withdraw. He felt powerless because he lost control over his life; he felt life had no meaning after his wife passed; he rejected modern society's values; he avoided interacting with his neighbors, showing social isolation; and he isolated himself from others in his daily life. Through these elements, the novel shows alienation as a condition that comes from sadness, loss, and broken relationships. This study helps us understand how alienation is depicted in modern literature and can serve as a basis for future research on emotional resilience and reintegration in society.
2025-12-25T23:55:12+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4584 Interpreting Speech Acts in Political Context: A Political Discourse Analysis of Prabowo Subianto’s Speech On Public Unrest 2025-12-26T00:04:38+00:00 Shila Zalsabila szalsabila03@gmail.com Fani Indrawan fani.indrawan@uinsa.ac.id
This research explores how speech acts are used in Prabowo Subianto’s press conference on August 31, 2025, to respond to national protests and public unrest. The research aims to identify the types of speech acts expressed in the speech and to interpret how they contribute to the framework of political discourse. The study engaged a qualitative descriptive method using the transcript from the SekretariatPresiden YouTube channel as the main data source. The analysis applied Searle’s (1979) Speech Act Theory to categorize the utterances and Fairclough’s (2010) Political Discourse Theory to interpret their political and social implications. The findings expose that Prabowo’s speech indicates a strategic use of language to influence the public, build authority, and project political responsibility. The speech reflects a balance among assertive expressions of policy, directive attract for public cooperation, and declarative statements showing government action. Through this linguistic pattern, the study highlights how language works not only as communication but also as a performative act that strengthen legitimacy and leadership during a period of social pressure. Directive speech acts such as commands, requests, prohibitions, warnings, and suggestions are used to influence the actions of others, regulate cooperation within a team, and maintain social rules. This study applies descriptive qualitative methods using the theory proposed by Searle (1979) regarding directive speech acts and Brown & Levinson (1987) regarding politeness strategies to examine the interactions of the main characters: Callie, Phoebe, Gary, and Trevor. The analysis shows that the most dominant type of directive speech act is commands. In urgent situations that require a quick response and emphasize clarity, commands are generally conveyed using the bald on record strategy. Meanwhile, the use of negative and positive politeness strategies is generally used in requests and suggestions to maintain respect and build cooperation. In addition, warnings and prohibitions usually use the bald on record strategy so that the speaker gets a quick response and the listener can easily understand what the speaker is saying. Meanwhile, the off record strategy is not found, because the film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has an action context that faces many urgent language situations that require quick responses. These findings emphasize how politeness strategies influence the way directives are conveyed, create cooperation, balance authority, and provide emotional support to the characters.
2025-12-25T23:59:12+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Proceedings of National English Undergraduate Student Conference (NEUSCO) https://proceedings.uinsa.ac.id/index.php/neusco/article/view/4593 An Investigation of Code-Switching and Mixing in the Close The Door Teens: In Therapy Podcast 2025-12-26T00:04:40+00:00 Wardatuz Zahro wardatuzzhr13@gmail.com Raudlotul Jannah raudlotuljannah@uinsa.ac.id
This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of code-switching and code-mixing in the Close The Door Teens: In Therapy podcast titled “Bintang Tamu Terakhir Azka!
