Abstract

This study examines the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing in the TV program Rakyat Bersuara on iNews, specifically in the episode “Rocky Gerung vs Sylvester Matituna”. Code-switching refers to the shift between languages or language varieties within a discourse, while code-mixing involves the blending of elements from two or more languages within a single utterance. The aim of this research is to identify the forms of code-switching and code-mixing that occur in the interaction between Rocky Gerung and Sylvester Matituna, and to analyze the social and linguistic factors that influence these phenomena. Using a descriptive qualitative method and a sociolinguistic approach, data was taken from the transcript of the conversation in the episode. The findings that code-switching and code-mixing frequently occur, influenced by factors such as social background, situational context, and the roles and communicative goals of the speakers. This study also highlights how language is used as a tool to strengthen arguments and reflect the speakers’ social and professional identities.
